Mission and Purpose

The primary goal of the "Be the One" program is to reduce veteran and service member suicides by providing education, resources, and peer support. The initiative emphasizes that one suicide is too many and encourages everyone—veterans, military families, and community members—to take action when someone may be at risk The American Legion+1. The program also works to destigmatize mental health treatment and reassure those struggling that it is “OK to not be OK”

Training and Education

Participants can access free suicide prevention training developed in collaboration with Columbia University, using the Columbia Suicide Severity Rating Scale. Training teaches how to:

  • Identify at-risk individuals and suicidal ideation
  • Recognize behaviors indicating imminent risk
  • Communicate effectively with someone in crisis
  • Take appropriate action to help save a life The American Legion+1

American Legion posts often host VA S.A.V.E. training for members and community participants, and training materials are available online for broader access The American Legion.


Community Engagement

"Be the One" encourages Buddy Checks, where Legion members reach out to veterans in their communities to provide connection and support The American Legion+1. Posts, units, and squadrons can host events such as awareness hikes, 5Ks, symposiums, and fundraisers to promote mental health awareness and connect at-risk veterans with resources. The program also provides videos, podcasts, and downloadable content to educate and engage communities The American Legion+1.


Resources and Support

Veterans in crisis can access immediate help by calling 988 and pressing 1, texting 838255, or visiting the VA crisis line website legion-aux.org. The program also connects veterans to VA benefits, education, and employment resources, with accredited American Legion service officers offering no-cost assistance The American Legion+1.


Participation and Merchandise

Members of the American Legion Family are encouraged to take training, host events, and share resources. The program also offers merchandise and branding materials to raise awareness at local events The American Legion.
